Gemini 4 Carbon takes the lead: just a 2-point gap among the top three models

In the first entry in this tracker, Gemini 4 Carbon, announced by Google on October 28, ranks first in the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5 with 59 points. Claude Opus 5.5 (58) and GPT-6 Astra (57) are close behind; the gap among the top three is just 2 points. This shows there is no single “best model”—choosing based on the task is the better approach.

OpenAI and Anthropic each have three models on the list, while Google has two. Meta’s Muse Wonder Full ranks 8th. Kimi K3.1 Pro, released by Moonshot AI on October 23, ranks 10th with 46 points; it is the only Chinese model in the top 10, and its weights are expected to be released by November 4. GPT-6.1 Terra, released by OpenAI on October 26 in ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the API, ranks 6th with 51 points.

Access is the key consideration for users: Carbon is currently available only to select cybersecurity teams. The most capable options available for everyday work are Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Astra, and GPT-6.1 Sol. For free use, the standout model is Claude Sonnet 5.5 on claude.ai; ChatGPT’s free tier uses GPT-6 Luna, while free Gemini uses “Auto” mode, which runs Flash-Lite most of the time.

On the product front, the past week has been dominated by agents and integrations: the Computer Use tool became generally available in the Gemini API, file creation and editing arrived in Gemini chat, iCloud Mail and Calendar integrations were added to ChatGPT, and security-focused permission settings came to Claude Code. Outside the top 10, Qwen3.8 Max (34) and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 (32) are worth watching; the Qwen 4 family announced by Alibaba could be the next major development to change the rankings.

This is the tracker’s first entry. Rank movements start with the next edition; the updates in this edition cover the past week.

  • APIGrok API

Custom moderation guidelines in API requests

The `guidelines` array added to Grok API requests lets you define `decline` rules that make the model stricter in the nsfw, violence, and profanity categories. This allows developers to set application-specific safety boundaries in addition to default moderation.

    Usage details

Who can use it: Available to API teams using Chat Completions and Responses API; unavailable for multi-agent models and some deferred requests.

How to use it: Add the `guidelines` array to the request body; for each item, send the `type: "policy"`, relevant `category`, and `behavior: "decline"` fields.

Tip: Send only the categories you want to change; unspecified categories retain their default behavior.

Auto-review rules can be managed from cards

    Usage details

Who can use it: For Grok Bot users; Vault and bot email features are available in version 0.75.2 or later.
